Drugs
February 4, 2008
I was convinced not to take drugs by the West Australian government’s “Drug Aware” campaign. I thought that its slogan “Drugs are for mugs” was so lyrical and persuasive that it inspired me to discover more words that rhymed with “ugs”. And then I wrote this poem:
Don’t do drugs
Drugs are for mugs
Drugs are for bugs
Only bugs can be found in mugs
Don’t drink from mugs.
Don’t do drinks
Methinks drinks stinks
And it might take a bit of practice
But you can stop eating that cactus!
So don’t do the drugs!
Trotsky
February 4, 2008
Check it out, this is my favourite passage from Trotsky. It’s in the final paragraph of “Their Morals and Ours”:
In these immense events the “Trotskyists” learned the rhythm of history, that is, the dialectics of the class struggle. They also learned, it seems, and to a certain degree successfully, how to subordinate their subjective plans and programs to this objective rhythm. They learned not to fall into despair over the fact that the laws of history do not depend on their individual tastes and are not subordinated to their own moral criteria. They learned to subordinate their individual desires to the laws of history. They learned not to become frightened by the most powerful enemies if their power is in contradiction to the needs of historical development. They know how to swim against the stream in the deep conviction that the coming historical flood will carry them to the other shore. Not all will reach that shore, many will drown. But to participate in this movement with open eyes and an intense will – only this can give the highest moral satisfaction to a thinking being!
Same sex civil unions rally
February 4, 2008
There was an excellent protest in Canberra on Saturday February 2nd for same sex civil unions. It was organised by a bunch of queer youth, mostly students. Cool huh! I love it when young people take the lead. It attracted about 140 people. The demand was for the original version of the legislation, that allows for non-ACT residents to get a civil union, and for officially recognised public ceremonies. Speakers included ALP members Simon Corbell and Andrew Barr speaking, as well as Deb Foskey (Greens), Amy McDonell (Socialist Alliance), and this guy called Jack from Good Process. It was really important that Simon Corbell and Andrew Barr spoke. Amy from the Socialist Alliance gave the best speech, very critical of federal Labour. A bunch of people who were new to activism got their first experience of organising.
Next there is going to be a same sex marriage float in the Mardi Gras. Cool huh? And there is also the national day of action for same sex marriage on August 13th.
Hay How Will You Doing?
February 4, 2008
Hi everyone,
“Hay how will you doing?” is something that was on a Garfield shirt that a friend of mine got in Thailand. Cool huh?
This is my blog. I hope you like it! First I suppose I should introduce myself. Some of you may recognise me from my zine of the same name “It’s the Queer Revolutionary Disco!” I like to draw pretty drawings, I am an anthropology student, and I am an activist in the Socialist Alliance, Resistance and the Democratic Socialist Perspective (DSP). I get involved in a lot of political campaigns, like climate change, Burma solidarity, anti-war and same sex marriage. (disclaimer: everything on this blog is my own opinion and attitude. It is not necessarily representative of the socialist organisations I belong to).
I am not putting my name on this blog because I don’t want my family to google me and find it. If you know who I am I ask you to respect that when posting comments to my blog. Please do not include my name.
I am a goddamned QUEER. I have deep love for queer people, politics and culture. There an interview with me in “Slit” magazine (the one with BugGirl on the cover), and there are articles by me on queer politics in Green Left Weekly, the weekly newspaper put out by the DSP.
Green Left Weekly is the best damn newspaper on the Australian left. Frankly, anyone who says otherwise can suck my cock.
(disclaimer: I am a woman so I think it’s okay to say “suck my cock” because it’s not sexism, it’s a parody of sexism. Post a comment if you disagree)
Seriously though, check it out at www.greenleft.org.au
SO, I hope you enjoy my blog. I hope you are all having inspiring times out there in internet land. Because life is like, AMAZING. It is ecstatic and heart rending and tragical and beautiful and excruciating and wonderful. There is SO MUCH at stake and SO MUCH to fight for. Just look at Burma. Look at Redfern. Venezuela. Palestine. Look how pretty the trees are. I’m serious man, check out the glaciers. They’re incredible. But they are melting! It sucks. I would hack off my right arm if it meant we could all live in a world with peace and freedom and without poverty.
There is no room for cynicism in this life or on this blog or in this world. Well, we all get a bit cynical just because it is all so full on. But past a certain point I do not tolerate cynicism. So be aware of that if you post a comment on my blog. Only ecstatic passion , righteous anger and wide-eyed joy and wonder are allowed.
Hello world!
